Kindling & Heroes

Whump-thwack. Whump-thwack.

The boy barely noticed the wood as he split it into kindling, instead imagining he was slaying beasts and dragons with each swing of his axe.

His hand blazed with pain just as he grabbed another log.

"Leave that alone, you big bully!" the gnome seethed by the surprised boy's boots. "You're going to put your axe right through my kitchen, and I kindly ask you to stop!"

"Biting isn't very kind," sobbed the boy, his hand throbbing.

"Neither is chopping my house up for firewood! Some hero..." the gnome muttered as he rolled his log safely away.
